Step 1: The Reference Photo & The Blueprint
The magic starts with your photographs. Once you place an order, we discuss your favorite pictures. I always look for the image that captures the truest expression and has good lighting.
Once the reference is selected, I prepare my drafting table. I exclusively use heavy, acid-free, museum-quality paper. This ensures that your hand-drawn graphite art will not yellow or fade over the decades. The first step is mapping out the proportions. Getting the eyes exactly right is the most crucial part - if the eyes lack soul, the portrait won't feel alive.
Step 2: Building Layers & Contrast (The Drawing Process)
This is where time slows down. I don't use any digital shortcuts, AI tools, or tracing projectors. It is just me and my favorite set of professional graphite pencils.
I start with the lighter grades of graphite (like 2H and HB) to establish the base shading. Then, hour by hour, I build the contrast using softer, darker pencils (2B to 8B) for deep shadows, hair texture, and intricate details.
Drawing a custom pencil portrait is a slow, meditative process. Whether I am rendering the delicate lace of a wedding dress or the fluffy fur of a custom pet portrait, I focus on every single stroke to ensure the final piece captures 100% of the likeness and the emotion.
Step 3: The Final Polish & Fixative
Before a drawing is considered finished, I step back and look at it from a distance. I adjust the micro-contrasts, brighten the highlights with a precision eraser, and make sure the subject truly pops off the page.
Once the artwork is perfect and you've approved the digital preview, I carefully coat the paper with a professional matte workable fixative. This invisible protective layer locks the graphite onto the paper, ensuring your artwork is smudge-proof and safe to handle during framing.
Step 4: Safe Packaging for a Global Journey
One of the most common questions I get is: "Will my artwork get damaged in the mail?" Absolutely not. I treat the shipping process with the same care as the drawing process.
First, your finished portrait is gently covered with archival, acid-free tissue paper to protect the surface. Then, it is carefully rolled and placed inside a thick, crush-resistant cardboard mailing tube. I seal the caps tightly and waterproof the edges.
Tubes are the safest possible way to ship fine art internationally. They provide structural strength that prevents bending, creasing, or folding during transit. When your artwork arrives, it will unroll beautifully, ready to be flattened and placed into your favorite frame.
How to Choose the Perfect Photo for Your Custom Portrait
Every great piece of art starts with a great reference photo. If you are wondering how to select the best picture of your furry friend, here are three things I always look for as an artist:
- Quality and Natural Lighting ☀️: A well-lit, high-resolution photo is a game-changer. Natural daylight brings out the deep reflections in your pet's eyes and the intricate textures of their fur, allowing me to draw those tiny, lifelike details.
- The Full Picture (No Cropped Edges) 🖼️: Try to choose a photo where your pet’s ears, paws, and body are fully inside the frame. Having the complete picture gives me the freedom to create a perfectly balanced composition on the paper.
- Character and True Emotions 🐾: This is the most important part! Just like the motorcycle duo above, don't be afraid to choose a photo that shows off your pet's quirky personality. A joyful run, a funny expression, or a wind-blown smile always makes for a much more dynamic and emotional piece of art than a standard, posed picture.
